Section 1

Listen to the following talk-and fill in the blanks as you listen. You will listen to the talk ONCE only. You now have 60 SECONDS to look at questions 1 to 10.

Studying abroad can serve several purposes at once; it can extend your academic achievements, broaden your outlook and demonstrate initiative and adaptability to future employers. If you are to get the maximum (1)benefit from your studies overseas you need to select an institution in the mainstream of national life rather than a “college” (2)town perhaps tourist-ridden, or the internationalized capital city with its very high living costs.

I feel sure that our university can offer what you need over a wide range of (3)disciplines. The university is one of Britain’s leading centres of advanced teaching and research with students drawn from over 90 countries. Our city has the good (4) fortune to be a lively city, firmly set in the heart of British commercial and agricultural life, that has grown up over the centuries on the basis of technological pre-eminence (5) without bringing industry into the city centre itself. Here students can find themselves in the heart of British city life, yet only a few minutes away from beautiful and (6) historic countryside; this really is Great Britain.

Although by international standards our university, is quite small, with only 8,700 students, in Britain it is one of the (7) larger institutions offering both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The university has a long tradition of teaching students from overseas. This means that the university’s staff have developed an understanding of the special needs of overseas students and have, in many cases, developed (8) links with universities, research institutes and governments abroad. At the moment one in nine students comes from overseas and over 90 countries are (9)represented on the campus. As a student this means you have an opportunity to meet colleagues from many different cultures (10) while at the same time many of your friends could be students from your own state.
